Britská krátkosrstá mačka
Britská krátkosrstá mačka sa začala chovať po roku 1900 v Anglicku. Vyšľachtili ich z perzských mačiek a domácich mačiek s mohutnou stavbou tela a zo začiatku ich chovali výhradne v módnej modrej farbe. Až prikríženie perzských mačiek vnieslo do chovu britských mačiek základ rôznych farebných variantov. Britská mačka je v dnešnej dobe bezpochyby jedno z najpopulárnejších plemien. Je to najmä vďaka ich dobromyseľnej povahe, nádhernej mohutnej stavbe tela, i hebkej srsti.
Povaha
O britských mačkách sa traduje, že sú to mačky s pokojnou a vyrovnanou povahou. Britská mačka je vyrovnaná, sebestačná a pokojná, nie je vôbec hlučná. V mačacom veku je rovnako hravá a živá ako mačiatka iných plemien. Dobre sa znáša s inými domácimi zvieratami. Je prispôsobivá a priateľská, dobre vychádza s deťmi. Svojim ľuďom je verná a oddaná, má pochopenie pre ich slabosti a toleruje ich s veľkou dávkou trpezlivosti. Britské mačky nie sú agresívne; takéto správanie je skôr zriedkavé a tiež používanie pazúrov sa považuje za raritu.
Štandard
Britská mačka je stredne veľká až veľká mačka. Má krátku a hustú srsť s dobre vyvinutou podsadou. Britky majú mohutnú, guľatú hlavu s masívnou lebkou. Nos je krátky, široký a rovný. Malé uši sú mierne zaguľatené, široko posadené. Britky majú veľké a guľaté oči oranžovej alebo medenej farby, povolené sú aj modré (u colours pointov so siamským zafarbením srsti) alebo zelené (u strieborných s kresbou) zafarbenie dúhovky.
Starostlivosť
Starostlivosť o britskú mačku je veľmi jednoduchá a zvládne ju aj začiatočník, či dieťa v školskom veku. Srsť britskej mačičky stačí prečesať raz za týždeň. S výnimkou silného znečistenia sa mačička vôbec nekúpe. Britské mačky sú pri dobrej starostlivosti a výžive veľmi vitálne a netrpia na žiadne zdravotné problémy.
Mačička potrebuje mať neusátle k dispozícii mačací záchod s podstielkou (na trhu je veľký výber podstielok za veľmi výhodné ceny) a prísun čerstvej vody, ktorú je potrebné meniť aspoň raz denne. Naša mačička má k dispozícii po celý deň aj kvalitné granule a aspoň raz denne dostáva surové premrazené mäsko (hydinové, hovädzie), či rôzne konzervy, kapsičky a maškrty.

The British Shorthair is a domesticated cat whose features make it a popular breed in cat shows. It has been the most popular breed of cat registered by the UK's Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) since 2001, when it overtook the Persian breed.
Breed description
British Shorthairs have dense, plush coats that are often described as crisp or cracking, referring to the way the coat breaks over the contours of the cat's body. Their eyes are large, round and widely set and can be a variety of colours, though the copper or gold eyes of the British blue are the best known. Their heads are round with full, chubby cheeks and their bodies are large and muscular. The breed has a broad chest and shoulders, short legs, round paws and a plush tail with a blunt tip. The British Shorthair is a very muscular cat, with a "square" body shape and thick legs. British Shorthairs have large, broad heads. Their eyes stand out and tend to be large and round. Their relatively small ears with rounded tips are set far apart. They have pert snub noses and slightly rounded chins.
Temperament
British Shorthairs are an easygoing breed of cat; they tend to be safe around children as they will tolerate a fair amount of physical interaction and hiss or scratch very rarely. They have a stable character and take well to being kept as indoor-only cats, making them ideal for apartment living. They are not terribly demanding of attention, though they will let their owner know if they feel like playing. They often prefer to sit close to their owners rather than on them.
British Shorthairs are wonderful cats for people who work, as they are very happy to simply laze around the house while their owner is out. They do not get destructive or need other animals for company, though they do enjoy having another British Shorthair or a cat with similar temperament around.
They are not a very vocal breed but will meow to communicate with their owners, for example when they are hungry and their food is being prepared. Some do not mind being cuddled, but most prefer to keep four paws on the ground and be patted rather than picked up.
The breed has become a favourite of animal trainers because of its nature and intelligence, and in recent years these cats have appeared in Hollywood films and television commercials. They can learn small tricks.
Care
British Shorthairs do not require a lot of grooming as their fur does not tangle or mat easily. However, it is recommended that the coat be brushed occasionally, especially during seasonal shedding, since they may develop hairballs at this time. British Shorthairs can be prone to obesity when desexed or kept indoors, so care should be taken with their diet
